As we move through seasons of change, it’s natural to wonder, “What’s next for me?”
For many of us, life transitions can feel like we’re standing at a crossroads, looking for direction. It’s this moment of uncertainty that is often the perfect time to rediscover the strengths that have always been within us—those unique abilities that define who we are and what we bring to the world.
Knowing our strengths, or as I like to call them, “superpowers,” can serve as a compass as we navigate new paths in career or personal life.
In Japanese, the term Ikigai reflects this idea beautifully: it’s our reason for being, our motivation that brings us fulfillment and purpose. Rediscovering your superpowers is often the first step to finding this purpose.
Here’s a simple exercise to help you start:
1. Identify Your Strengths or Superpowers
What skills or tasks come naturally to you? Maybe it’s the way you connect with others, your analytical mind, or your knack for problem-solving.
Write down three things you’re really good at—right now, in this stage of life. It’s less about what you were skilled at years ago and more about what you excel at today.
2. Celebrate Your Wins
When was the last time you acknowledged the coolest things about yourself? Take a few minutes to list ten things that make you you. It could be experiences (like completing a marathon), roles you cherish (like being a parent), or skills you’ve developed (such as mastering a new language).
Every one of these accomplishments adds a layer to your superpowers. Let yourself truly appreciate how far you’ve come.
3. Seek Outside Perspectives
Ask a few close friends or family members what they see as your strengths. What topics do they come to you for advice on?
This feedback can be eye-opening. You might discover common themes in their answers and with your own assessment, which will clarify what your real strengths are.
When we recognize and own these strengths, it builds confidence. We realize that the unique combination of skills and experiences we have can be applied in different areas, opening doors we might never have considered. No matter what stage of life you’re in, you have incredible strengths waiting to be tapped into. Take this time to reflect on them, and ask yourself if you are using these strengths to the utmost as you move forward in your life!
