Finding Your Reason for Being in the Midst of Upheaval

We’ve all been there—caught in that space where change feels as exciting as it is terrifying. Recently on my podcast The Midlife Reinvention, I spoke to Heather Pettey about what it’s like to find your reason for being when life throws a curveball. Heather shared her own journey, one that took her to a new place where she felt isolated, uncertain, and yet ultimately found her way back to herself through a renewed sense of purpose.

Like Heather, these transitions can reveal hidden passions or talents. It may feel uncomfortable at first, even isolating, but they’re often the spark for new beginnings.

Allow this discomfort to push you to explore new opportunities and remind you what you’re capable of when you lean into change instead of resisting it.

Reprogramming Your Mindset

One of the biggest challenges during career and life transitions is managing our mindset. When everything is new or uncertain, our minds can fall into patterns of negativity or self-doubt. We might cling to past routines or thinking about the “good old days” instead of focusing on what we can do in the present.

This is where the idea of “reprogramming” comes in. Rather than seeing change as a loss, we can start to view it as a chance to realign with what really matters. It’s a shift from looking back to moving forward.

And by intentionally reframing our negative thoughts and creating positive, actionable goals, we begin to focus on building a life that reflects our current values and aspirations.

Pushing Past the Fear of Judgment

The fear of what others might think can be one of the biggest barriers to change. It’s natural to want others’ approval, and taking steps into the unknown often means dealing with fears of judgment. This fear can be paralyzing, keeping us from sharing our voice or taking risks.

But pushing past that fear opens up incredible possibilities. Putting ourselves out there, whether by starting something new or sharing a personal journey, helps us build confidence and connect with others who might feel the same way.

In fact, it often turns out that people respect us even more when we’re authentic and true to ourselves. Facing that fear head-on allows us to remove limitations and step fully into who we’re becoming.

Living Fully During Career & Life Transitions

Navigating career and life transitions can be daunting. Yet, if we view it as an opportunity to realign with our “reason for being” and pursue passions we may have set aside, it can be so rewarding.

We have the opportunity to reinvent our path forward which aligns with who we are, and what we truly want. Are you ready to take that path?.
